Description      The aim of the conference is to bring scholars and students of languages, literature, linguistics (socio-cultural linguistics) and translation studies together. The conference sessions will cover the following general topics in five sections:

1. Culture, Language and Social Sciences

(Articles in Kazakh, Russian, Turkish, English; Presentations in English):

The Perspectives of Cultural Studies, Linguistics, interdisciplinary linguistic studies (Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, etc); Focus on the meaning of language: Semantics, Pragmatics, and Stylistics; Focus on the form of language: Phonetics, Lexicology, and Grammar; Applied Linguistics (Foreign language acquisition, Bilingualism, etc); the contribution of social sciences to solve problems of modern societies (Philosophy, Sociology, Political Science, Ecology,Psychology, Pedagogy, etc.)

2. Kazakh Language and Literature (in Kazakh):

Kazakh Language in the Horizon of the New Century; Teaching Kazakh Language to speakers of other languages; Kazakh Language and its interaction with Russian; Kazakh Language and its interaction with the other Turkic languages (i.e. Turkish); Kazakh Language as the mother tongue as an element of ethno pedagogy; Education in Kazakh Language and its impact on social identities of the citizens; Kazakh Cultural Heritage in Literature ; Theory of literature and literary definitions in Kazakh ; Interaction of Kazakh Literature with Pedagogical Sciences ; Teaching Kazakh Literature in Kazakh-medium Schools in Kazakhstan ; Teaching Kazakh Literature in Russian-medium Schools in Kazakhstan ; Kazakh Literature in the context of Turkic Literature

3. Turkish Language Teaching (in Turkish):

Teaching Turkish to Speakers of Other Languages; Teaching Turkish to Russian speakers ; Teaching Turkish to Kazakh Language speakers ; Special methods of teaching Turkish as a foreign language

4. English Language Teaching (in English):

Contemporary Methods of ELT ; Learner-centred foreign language education ; Teaching styles and types of teacher-student interaction in ELT ; Communicative language teaching ; Technology in a foreign language class ; Integrating the education of universal humanitarian values into ELT curriculum ; Techniques of teaching grammar (pronunciation, vocabulary, or other skills) ; MORE …

5. Translation (Kazakh –English, Kazakh- Turkish, Russian –English Russian-Turkish):

a) Problems of Translation into/from Kazakh Language (in Kazakh - English/Turkish)

Language of Presentations and Lectures

English, Kazakh, Turkish and Russian are the languages of the conference.

The abstract presentations will be in the relevant language of the sections that they

belong to. The presentation of abstracts in one of the other three languages will be shortly interpreted into the language of the section by a translator.

 

• Presentation of Proposals

Presentations will last 15 to 20 minutes with 5 or 10 minutes for guided discussion and

questions. The conference will also include themed forums led by a moderator.

Due to time limitations, the organising committee is going to reserve decisions on which abstracts should be presented during the conference and which abstracts should only be published in the conference materials.

If you want to participate without presenting a paper, i.e. chair a session, or any other offer to help, please send an email to us.

 

• Participation

Abstracts (no longer than six A4 - size pages) should be written in Microsoft Office Word 2003, Times New Romans (14-font size, Margins: 3cm left, 1 cm right, 2 cm top and bottom.)

Abstracts should include:

• Title of Proposed Paper,

• Family Name (s), First Name (s),

• Institutional Affiliation,

• Current Position, and / or Academic Title

• An E-mail Address

• At least 5 key words that best describe the subject of your submission.

• Reference section at the end of your article which lists no more than 15 resources

• Summary or short descriptions of your article should be written in short paragraphs (no more than 50 words each) in two different languages of the conference (English, Kazakh, Russian or Turkish) other than the language of your article.

 

• Participation Procedure

Submission of your abstract by e-mail is the first step of your intention for participation. Then you should pay the registration fee to the account of the university and send the scanned receipt by e-mail. You should also fill in the registration form, in which you provide detailed information to help us make necessary arrangements for a better organisation.

The abstracts submitted before the deadline will be published in the book of conference materials.

The authors will have the full responsibility of accuracy and authenticity of their abstracts since the materials will be published as they are received in our e-mail account without any further edition or correction.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is April 10, 2009. Please submit your abstract by

e-mail to conference@sdu.edu.kz or sduconference@gmail.com.

Residents of Almaty may visit our university and submit their abstracts to the organization committee at the following address:

• RegistrationFee

 

Basic Registration Fee for national citizens is 4000 tenges, covering access to all sessions.

Registration Fee (until March 27th, 2009) for international participants is 100 $,

The Late Registration Fee for international participants (after March 27th) is 150 $ .

 

• Accommodation

 

Hotels cost between 70 $ and 360 $ a night. (A night at a 3 star hotel in Almaty is about

120 $). If requested by the participant, an early booking can be arranged by the organizing committee. , if the participant wants to arrange his or her accommodation independently)
